KFU’s work in petroleum science presented at two conferences

The Tatarstan Academy of Sciences hosted the opening of the scientific and practical conferences Geodynamics and Oil and Gas Prospects of Sedimentary Basins and Petrophysics XXI, co-organized by Kazan Federal University, the Academy, and Tatneft.

Participants in the events, held as part of the International Scientific Days and dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, were welcomed by Rifkat Minnikhanov, President of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences; Anatoly Zamriy, First Deputy Chairman of the Union of Oil and Gas Producers of Russia and member of the Public Council of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation; and Danis Nurgaliev, Vice Rector for Earth Sciences of Kazan Federal University.

In his speech, Dr Minnikhanov emphasized that the development of the oil and gas industry today is impossible without the widespread use of modern field exploration methods, including artificial intelligence. AI helps optimize processes in various fields: geological exploration, production, monitoring, and management.

The President of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences thanked scientists, including those from Kazan Federal University, for their developments in the oil and gas sector and noted that they contributed to the formation of a strong scientific and industrial school in Tatarstan.

Concluding his speech, Rifkat Minnikhanov congratulated Danis Nurgaliev on his election as a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan.

“Conferences like these are an excellent opportunity to present breakthrough ideas, advance scientific theses and developments, and also to consider new talent and potential personnel, which the industry currently so desperately needs,” said Mr Zamriy, chairman of the Geodynamics conference, welcoming the audience.

He lauded Tatarstan as a leading province of Russia, congratulated the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences on its 35th anniversary, and expressed his hope that it would continue to develop the country’s innovative potential and train young scientists.

In his speech, Danis Nurgaliev noted the main advantage of bringing together conferences across various scientific fields, “It’s important that specialists from different fields have the opportunity to meet, and through this interaction, they can develop brilliant interdisciplinary ideas.”

According to the Vice-Rector, the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences constantly provides assistance to young researchers and promotes the republic’s innovative development.

“Hundreds of young scientists from Kazan University receive support from the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. Many of them win grants, and their laboratories also receive grants, supporting innovative ideas,” he explained. “Furthermore, schools for young scientists and other useful events are regularly held.”

At the joint plenary session, presentations were made by Oleg Prishchepa, Vice-Rector for Research at the Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University; Sergey Turuntayev, Director of the Sadovsky Institute of Geosphere Dynamics of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Antonina Stupakova, Director of the Institute for Advanced Oil and Gas Studies at Moscow State University; and others.

“I always promote Tatarstan’s achievements. It has an excellent research tradition, probably the foremost in oil field development. Moreover, production conditions in the republic are challenging. There is a lot of hard-to-recover, highly viscous, heavy oil,” Prishchepa said in an interview with the media.

More than 200 experts in geology and the petroleum industry from Russia and abroad are participating in the conferences, presenting over 100 papers.

Representing KFU are scientists from the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies and the Institute of Physics.
