On July 12, the 20th Oil Summit of the Republic of Tatarstan opened in Almetyevsk. The event is one of the biggest platforms where topical issues of fuel and energy complex enterprises development are discussed and a consolidated position of the government and business on key technological priorities is formulated.

The summit was attended by Rustam Minnikhanov, Rais (Governor) of Tatarstan, Sergey Tsivilyov, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation, Yuri Shafranik, Chairman of the Committee for Energy Strategy and Development of the Fuel and Energy Complex, and others.

Kazan Federal University was represented at the summit by Danis Nurgaliev, Vice-Rector for Earth Sciences, Vladislav Sudakov, Deputy Director of IGPT for Innovation, and Mikhail Varfolomeev, Chair of the Department of Petroleum Engineering.

Rustam Minnikhanov welcomed the participants of the summit at the plenary discussion devoted to the development of Russia’s fuel and energy complex.

He noted that the most important condition for the development of every industry, including the oil industry, is human resources.

“The issue of personnel is the most important. We need competent, enterprising, highly qualified specialists. No one will train them but us. Today we are actively working to strengthen the link between all levels of education – from kindergarten to higher education. Strategic projects are being implemented in the Republic. One of them is the campus of the Higher School of Petroleum, where we currently are. This is a world-class educational center. Advanced teaching, laboratory and research buildings have been built, and a unique educational ecosystem is being created. At the same time, the comfort for life and work of our citizens depends on the level of social infrastructure development,” Rustam Minnikhanov said.

Sergey Tsivilyov also suggested investing in human capital.

“We need to actively attract young people to the fuel and energy complex, and work in this industry should be prestigious. The future of the fuel and energy complex is, among other things, in such campuses. New projects and technologies are created here, which will later change the industry as a whole,” the Minister added.

The summit included an industry exhibition where companies and universities presented their products and equipment for exploration, development and production of oil and gas, oil refining, petrochemicals, tire business, and biotechnology.

Danis Nurgaliev told the guests more about KFU’s key developments.

“The exhibition presented the latest technologies developed within our Center for Liquid Hydrocarbons,” he said. “We presented the technology of using sodium to enhance oil recovery, showed the results of research on reducing the sulfur content in oil, the possibilities of 3D electric exploration, geochemical monitoring technology to improve the efficiency of development of large fields. In addition, we introduced the guests to the history and important results of Kazan Federal University and the Center for Liquid Hydrocarbons, told them about the training of experts for the oil and gas industry, and recalled the outstanding graduates of the Institute who developed Western Siberia.”

Speaking about training of personnel for the fuel and energy complex, it is important to note that the Center for Advanced Training (CdoGEO) is successfully working at the Institute. The center annually trains more than 1,500 specialists who improve their qualifications or undergo professional retraining.

During the summit, Rustam Minnikhanov and Sergey Tsivilyov launched a hackathon as part of the 5h International Oil and Gas Youth Forum. The forum is organized at the Higher School of Petroleum and will last until July 16.
