Open Doors Day held at Institute

On March 2, more than 60 students of grades 8, 9, 10 and 11, as well as their parents, gathered for the Open Doors Day at the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies. Many came from other cities – Nizhny Novgorod Region, Almetyevsk, Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhny Novgorod, Yoshkar-Ola, Samara, Oktyabrsky, Gelendzhik, etc.

After registration, the students were given information booklets and offered interactive tasks, for example, to assemble puzzles with pictures on geological topics, to identify 10 minerals and rocks. As a reward, there was a tasty gift – a small chocolate bar.

Then all the guests were escorted to the Assembly Hall of the Institute, where they were greeted by Vice-Rector for Earth Sciences Danis Nurgaliev, who explained to future students the importance of choosing the right profession and introduced them to the study programs.

Acting Director of the Institute Vladimir Silantyev emphasized that geology always keeps up with the times, since it uses the latest technologies, including neural networks.

Deputy Director for Continuing Education and Industrial Partnerships, Head of the Center for Advanced Training (CdoGEO) Ildus Chukmarov told future students how to increase their competitiveness in the labor market.

After answering questions, Deputy Director for Academic Affairs Andrey Teryokhin suggested moving on to the second part of the program – “test drive”. During it, schoolchildren were able to feel like real students of the Institute. Even during registration, each participant received a “student card”, a “record book” and was assigned to a study group. And then, under the guidance of volunteers, the participants began their test drive. For over two hours, schoolchildren got acquainted with the classrooms of the institute and attended 20-minute lectures. The visitors were introduced to general geology, geophysics, paleontology, and they also attended classes on GIS (geographical information system), petroleum geology, visited a computer tomography laboratory and the 3D Geo Center.

The event concluded with a visit to the Shtukenberg Geological Museum.
